Secure sign-in
Canvassers sign in with their phone number and organization to receive a secure one-time code. At login, Turnout downloads the turf configuration, custom app copy, translations and the list of available shift locations — so canvassers are ready to go before they leave the field office.

Dashboard

Shift management
Starting a shift takes seconds. Canvassers enter their shift date, start time and location, then choose the type of collection they are doing — voter registration, petitions or both. Each shift is named automatically but can be customized for easy reference later.
Because canvassers often move between locations during a single outing, Turnout supports multiple shifts with different locations so every collection point is tracked separately and accurately.

Form capture and redaction
When a registrant completes a paper form, the canvasser photographs it directly in the app. Turnout then prompts the canvasser to redact sensitive information — such as Social Security numbers or dates of birth — by drawing redaction blocks over the fields on the touch screen.
Which fields require redaction is configured at the turf level in Blocks, so different states and organizations can enforce their own compliance rules. Once the canvasser confirms the redaction, Turnout permanently replaces the original image with the redacted version, ensuring sensitive data is never stored or transmitted.

Shift history
Every shift a canvasser logs is tracked in the shift history view. Canvassers can see all of their past shifts listed with the location, date, time range and completion status — making it easy to verify what has been collected and what still needs to be synced.
Shift history is available offline, so canvassers can review their work even when they are still in the field without an internet connection.

Offline-first with smart sync
Turnout is built offline-first. Canvassers collect registrations, photograph forms and complete shifts entirely on-device. When they return to the field office or reach a reliable internet connection, Turnout initiates a sync with Blocks — uploading shift data, form images and redaction metadata.
The settings screen gives canvassers full visibility into their stored forms, pending syncs and redaction templates. If a sync fails partway through — due to a dropped connection, for example — canvassers can see exactly which items are still pending and retry when ready.

Blocks integration
Turnout is not a standalone app — it is the field extension of Blocks. Once a shift is synced, all of the data flows into your existing Blocks workflows. Form images are processed through OCR, quality control teams can begin reviewing registrations immediately and canvasser performance metrics update in real time.
